At the pit near Decatur, Ill., on Oct. 4, the guys cooked 130 lbs. of fish for customers and suppliers at Vulcan’s Customer Appreciation Day, according to mine manager Rob McMahan.

McMahan said he and his employees enjoy hosting the annual event, which includes a free lunch of fresh, deep-fried fish cooked on site by members of the Blue Mound Rotary Club along with all the fixings for a great meal. He estimated sixty people stopped by to eat and lots of take-out orders were put together as well.

Jeff May, Vulcan’s senior operations manager, said many Vulcan mines host similar events for its employees, customers and the local community. The following week, safety and law enforcement were the themes at Vulcan’s McCook Quarry. In addition to a nice meal, truckers could receive a courtesy safety inspection conducted by officers from the truck enforcement division of the local police department.

This was the 11th year for Vulcan’s customer appreciation day at Macon County Sand, which alternates each year with the event hosted at the Rochester Sand & Gravel pit about 35 mi. away. During each customer appreciation day, guests may purchase 50/50 tickets with proceeds benefiting a local food pantry.
