Working together, four members of the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance have received the 2006 Construction Quality Award from the Virginia Department of Transportation for their work on the Mattaponi River Bridge Replacement Project, Route 33 in West Point, Va.
The awards are given annually to recognize a project team whose work exemplifies the best in construction quality and management practices.
The prime contractors recognized for excellence in construction are McLean Contracting Company and Bryant Contracting Inc. Lead Designer for the project was PB. The Consultant Project Manager was Wilbur Smith Associates.
The Saluda Residency in VDOT’s Fredericksburg District was also recognized for excellence in project management.
The Mattaponi River Bridge Replacement Project is the first of two projects that will replace two swing span bridges with modern four lane bridges through the Town of West Point. As a replacement for the Lord Delaware Bridge, which carried Route 33 over the Mattaponi River, the project is an integral part of relieving major traffic bottlenecks for rail, river barge, and vehicular traffic traveling between I-64 and Route 17, while complementing community efforts to revitalize this essential business corridor. Overcoming strict environmental challenges involving the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the project was completed on time and on budget.
VTCA represents contractors, aggregate producers, engineers and suppliers who design, build and maintain the Commonwealth’s transportation infrastructure. The awards were presented on April 12 during the VTCA Spring Conference in Roanoke.
