Construction Equipment Guide

The Cat 993K wheel loader is a totally new model and offers a new size class in the Caterpillar line. The 25-ton (23 t) loader capacity matches perfectly with the Cat 777 and 785 off-highway trucks.

Built on an all-new platform, the new loader features Z-bar linkage, hydraulics and power train that deliver increased penetration into the pile and high breakout forces — 20 percent more than the 992G. The increased performance and capacity result in a 15 to 20 percent improvement in productivity compared to the 992G, according to the manufacturer.

The new loader also features the Cat C32 ACERT engine for increased performance and U.S. EPA Tier II/EU Stage IIa emissions compliance. It produces net power of 950 hp (708 kW).

The 993K also offers solutions to ease maintenance and boost reliability. For example, the Cat sleeve bearing pins eliminate the need for daily greasing of the front linkage. To lower life cycle costs, the 993K is designed to meet mining customer rebuild requirements and have an estimated 45,000-hour structure life.

The loader design also emphasizes operator safety and comfort. The wider platform allows a spacious cab, and a trainer seat is standard equipment. Seat-mounted controls allow precise operation even on rough ground, and electronically controlled lift and bucket tilt detents can be set from the operator seat.

The optional rearview camera increases the view behind the machine and an optional rear access system replaces the left hand ladder and lifts the operator to and from the cab.

Productive Power Train and Hydraulics

The power train and hydraulics are designed to deliver high productivity and low cost per ton. As compared to the 3508B engine used in previous mining loaders, the C32 engine delivers 19 percent more power and a 5 percent increase in fuel efficiency. The C32 also powers several other Caterpillar mining machines, which simplifies parts inventory management.

The 993K features the next generation modular radiator (NGMR), which has copper fins for enhanced heat exchange capabilities. The design and construction minimizes space required for the cooling package and allows enhanced sight lines to the rear.

Positive flow control (PFC) hydraulics is the next generation of load-sensing hydraulics. Additional sensors at the pumps provide enhanced responsiveness that the operator can feel and use. The full return flow filtration system filters 100 percent of the implement oil return flow to 6 microns for extended component life and increased uptime. The optional deluxe filtration system prevents downstream contamination in case of a a failure.

The Cat planetary power shift transmission is electronically controlled and features three forward and three reverse speeds. The impeller clutch torque converter allows the operator to match rimpull to the application and underfoot conditions through the use of a foot pedal and adjustments made through the rimpull control system.

The all-wheel drive design features four planet carrier gears with planetary double reduction in each wheel. Double reduction final drives reduce power train stresses and extend power train life and durability.

Design for Safe Operation and Maintenance

The 993K incorporates a number of new designs to enhance operator comfort, safe operation and easier access for service. For example, the new, larger cab provides a greater viewing area to the work place, easier access and egress and storage to keep the cab uncluttered. Wide platform access stairs and a window-washing platform also enhance movement around the outside of the cab.

The Cat comfort seat is 6-way adjustable to accommodate the operator and the seat belt is retractable to keep it off the floor. A heated seat and high intensity discharge lights are options as are heated mirrors.

Service centers are conveniently located to allow access from the ground. Most lockouts are located in a rear bumper service center. The standard and the optional deluxe service centers enable the technician to perform a variety of service procedures from an easily accessed ground level location on the right side of the machine. Remote pressure ports aid diagnostics work.

The VIMS machine health-monitoring system, equipped with Advisor display, records data for diagnostics and prognostics. The new system offers easier navigation compared to previous systems, according to the manufacturer.

Options for reduced maintenance include the Caterpillar Oil Renewal System (ORS). By regularly burning small amounts of engine oil and automatically adding makeup oil to the crankcase, ORS offers a means to reduce or eliminate engine oil changes and to increase machine availability. Another option is zip-in zip-out glass. This feature provides rubber-mounted glass, which does not require adhesives to retain the glass. The system enables fast changes of damaged glass.
