Operating in quarry conditions falls under the category of "severe duty," so it comes as no surprise that Tilcon New York chose to commit to a long-term lease of 12 JCB skid steers rather than purchase the machines. From past experience Tilcon has learned that leasing the machines for a specific period of time allows the company to hit a "sweet spot" for the machines’ ultimate return on investment; returning them when costly repairs are most likely to start becoming an issue.

"We have used A. Montano Company in the past and they have demonstrated their effectiveness in supporting machines that we have purchased and rented from them, therefore we feel very confident in moving forward with the lease of this package of skid steers," said James Slaughter, Tilcon New York division equipment manager.

A. Montano Company, located in Saugerties, N.Y., is the authorized dealer servicing the lower and mid-Hudson Valley region of New York State for JCB, Hyundai, Sakai and Takeuchi.

Of the 12 skid steers Tilcon leased, three are model 300 wheeled skid steers, each with a 3,000-lb. operating capacity and a 74 hp JCB engine. Nine are model 175 wheeled skid steers, each with a 1,750-lb. operating capacity powered by a 60 hp diesel engine. These units will be dispatched to various Tilcon locations across New York, including Goshen, Clinton Point, West Nyack, Haverstraw, Bronx and Maybrook. The skid steers will be used for applications that involve general cleanup around each quarry, which would include tasks such as cleaning out debris beneath the conveyors of the production facilities or the movement or loading of smaller quantities of materials in and around the quarry. All of the skid steers are standardly equipped with the features that JCB are best known for including high flow hydraulics, seven function joy stick control and side door entry.

"At Tilcon, safety is our number one concern," said Slaughter. "Many of the features of these JCB machines help us achieve our safety goals. In most skid steer designs the operator is required to climb over the bucket and hydraulic arms in the front of the machine and enter through a front access door. The JCB is designed with a side entry door just like a rubber-tired loader, a much safer access point for our operators.

"Once inside the cab they have 270 degrees of visibility. This allows our operators to have the best view of their surroundings available to them and certainly a better view of your surroundings translates to a safer operation. With other styles of skid steers, once the operator enters the front door in very tight quarters he has to turn himself around and lower himself into the operator seat. For operators with back issues this can create a problem. The JCB has the largest cab in the industry and the operator from the side door can access the seating and controls with little or no effort."
