Construction Equipment Guide

Komatsu America Corp.’s rubber-tracked compact track loaders have a wide supporting surface allowing the machines to effectively work on any type of soil, including mud and snow. The CK30-1 has an operating weight of 9,546 lbs. (4,330 kg) and the CK35-1 has an operating weight of 10,053 lbs. (4,560 kg).

Both machines are powered by Komatsu engines delivering a net power of 84 hp (62.6 kW). The turbocharged and water-cooled direct fuel injection engines meet EPA emissions requirements and remain fuel-efficient without sacrificing power or productivity.

The compact track loaders are becoming increasingly attractive to contractors and operators alike because they work in conditions where the conventional wheel type skid steer loaders tend to struggle. With a low 4-5 psi ground pressure, these machines are useful for any job but prove superior in soft conditions or where minimum soil compaction is desired, according to the manufacturer.

Special features of the CK30-1 and the CK35-1 include:

• Loader Arm Design and Technology

The CK30-1 loader utilizes a “radial” lift path technology while the larger CK35-1 is a vertical lift path loader. The radial lift path is ideally suited to ground engaging applications while the vertical lift path with its 129-in. (328 cm) hinge pin height (8 in. [20 cm] more than the CK30-1), is more suited to material handling and truck loading operations.

• Transmission, Controls

Every Komatsu unit is equipped with pilot proportional control (PPC) joystick controls that are easy for any operator to use and an automatic two-speed transmission provides faster ground speed and loading cycles than machines with a typical single speed transmission. The operators also have the choice of two control patterns, ISO and optional hand controls. Both control patterns are fully hydraulic, adjustment and maintenance free.

• Operating Capacity

The CK30-1 features a rated operating capacity of 2,485 lbs. (1,127 kg), a tipping load of 7,100 lbs. (3,220 kg) and a bucket breakout force of 5,038 lbs. (2,285 kg) based on a short lip bucket design.

The CK35-1 features a rated operating capacity of 2,755 lbs. (1,250 kg), a tipping load of 7,870 lbs. (3,570 kg) and a bucket breakout force of 6,100 lbs. (2,767 kg) based on a short lip bucket design.

• Undercarriage

Before adopting the final design, Komatsu engineers studied existing undercarriage and track systems and identified both strengths and weaknesses. The result is a system that maximizes the life of the rubber track and an offset track pad pattern for a smoother and more stable ride, according to the manufacturer.

• Operator Comfort

Both machines offer optional, fully enclosed cabs with slide-up overhead front doors, feature an expansive entrance, 360-degree visibility, heating and air conditioning. Other options include ride control, engine air pre-cleaner, and a suspension seat for increased operator comfort.

Safety features include a backup alarm, horn, retractable seat belt, and a seat switch and lap bar that automatically neutralizes machine operations when the operator moves off the seat or raises the bar.

• Ease of Maintenance and Serviceability

Komatsu uses bronze bushings and dust-seals, which mean the greasing/lubrication of pins is required at 250 hour intervals while most competitors require daily greasing. A tilt-forward cab and engine cover provides easy access to all engine, driveline and hydraulic components and the every-day machine checks can all be accomplished by simply raising the lockable engine cover.
