The booming construction business and home-improvement craze has turned United Rentals—which rents everything from small hand tools for do-it-yourselfers to backhoes for general contractors—into the 70-ton dump truck of the equipment rental industry. United Rentals is the top pick in the services category of Fortune’s annual list of America’s Fastest Growing Companies.

United Rentals, an AED member based in Greenwich, CT, has branches nationwide. The list of America’s Fastest Growing Companies was compiled by Zacks Investment Research. To make the list, companies had to be based in the United States, be publicly traded for at least three years, and have revenue and market cap of at least $50 million. At a minimum, firms had to show 30 percent annual growth over three years in revenue and EPS, and positive earnings in the latest quarter and for the last four combined. The final order derives from the sum of the rankings of growth in revenues, EPS, and total stock market return over three years.
