Despite the tragic events of Sept. 11, the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) decided to conduct business as usual and to continue plans to hold its 2001 Midyear Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT, on October 11-14. This decision came in response to requests made by White House officials to continue all meetings in order to stimulate the economy, particularly the travel and tourism industry and to demonstrate that America’s business will continue to function on a normal, day-to-day basis.
AGC’s President, Bob Desjardins said, "Today, as we commemorate the landfall of Columbus in the Americas, we all need to continue to move forward with our lives and we need to continue all meetings to demonstrate to the world that America’s business continues. AGC made the decision not to cancel the midyear meeting and to conduct business as usual in defiance of those who seek to disrupt America’s business and values system."
The 2001 AGC Midyear Meeting will consist of nearly 100 seminars, committee meetings and social activities. On Friday, Oct. 12, there will be a special briefing from Immediate Past President Ralph Johnson, Turner Corporation, NY, on the terrorist attack and his first-hand report from "ground zero." Also on Friday there will be several presentations on the status of e-business in the construction industry.
