The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced that Pennsy Supply Inc. of Harrisburg, PA, is the winner of a 2000 Community Involvement Award.
NAPA presents its Community Involvement Award to Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) companies that serve their communities through outstanding programs and projects. “NAPA understands how important it is for the companies in our industry to participate in and support their communities,” said R. Wayne Evans, chairman of the NAPA board of directors. “This award reflects the high priority that Pennsy Supply places upon its relationship with its neighbors.”
For the past two years, Pennsy Supply has been using the “Rockman” educational program developed by the aggregates industry to give teachers and students the opportunity to learn more about its industry. The program has a specific, grade-appropriate curriculum that includes well-designed lesson plans in math, reading, science, social studies, art, physical education, music and writing skill development. (Teachers choose the curriculum.)
The program starts with a classroom visit by Pennsy People, who dress in safety gear. They show a video, “Rockman’s Rocking Tune,” that highlights the various services that aggregate companies provide for their communities. A short presentation follows, after which the employees share the company’s “secret recipe” for asphalt with students.
Some time after this initial presentation, students and teachers get a chance to tour the plant itself, seeing for themselves the equipment and processes they have already learned about.
Pennsy Supply also held a community day at its Newport, PA, location, inviting everyone at Newport Elementary School and their families to attend. The company conducted tours of the facility, with employees explaining the machinery and various processes to their visitors.
