Construction Equipment Guide

Filling a need for a breaker attachment better matched to precise sub-classes of hydraulic carriers, the HB 3600 hydraulic breaker from Atlas Copco Constructions Tools offers a higher power-to-weight ratio and higher efficiency than similar weight breakers on the market, according to the manufacturer.

At a service weight of 7,940 lbs. (3,601 kg), the HB 3600 is suitable for hydraulic carriers in the 38.6- to 69-ton (35 to 63 t) weight class. The breaker accepts maximum hydraulic flow of 79 gal. per minute (299 lpm) at 2,610 psi.

Delivering an impact rate of up to 560 blows per minute, the HB 3600 is ideal for applications such as demolition, trenching, foundation work, tunneling, rock mining and secondary breaking.

By filling the gap among the breaker classes previously available, the HB 3600 helps to eliminate undersized or oversized compromises when it comes to breaker-carrier match. This also allows the new breaker to deliver up to 46-percent more impact energy per pound than the average breaker used within its carrier weight class, according to the manufacturer.

The HB 3600 comes standard with Atlas Copco’s PowerAdapt, a system that automatically shuts down the breaker in the event that it receives excessive oil pressure from the carrier, then returns it to normal function once the overflow situation is corrected. This prevents damage to the breaker’s internal components and provides protection against oil flow complications that can arise when attaching the breaker to different carriers.

Also standard on the HB 3600 is AutoControl, a monitoring system that allows the breaker to adapt its frequency and power output to match operating conditions. It begins by firing the first stroke at half power to create a pilot notch that will center the working tool and prevent unnecessary tool slippage. It then adjusts the power output to match the density of the specified material to be broken. This reduces excess shock on both the breaker and carrier and lengthens the service life on tension bolts and retainer bars.

To further maximize efficiency, the HB 3600 features the StartSelect system, which allows start-up and shut-off to be adjusted to fit job site conditions. In AutoStop mode, the breaker will not fire until the operator applies down pressure on the demolition tool via the carrier. AutoStop eliminates damaging blank firing by circulating the hydraulic oil internally under low pressure when down pressure is not applied to the tool. AutoStop also is ideal for safely circulating and warming the hydraulic system before breaking in cold climates.

In AutoStart mode, the StartSelect system works hand-in-hand with AutoControl. The breaker begins operating as soon as the working tool comes into contact with the material regardless of down pressure, but power is limited to 50 percent until the demolition tool can be fully seated in the breaker. This assures the breaker is properly positioned to accept full single blow energy safely without a damaging blank fire. AutoStart mode makes the breaker more versatile and ideal for demolition applications.

An energy recovery system that prevents damage from piston recoil on extremely hard materials is standard on the HB 3600. The system consists of a shuttle valve that detects piston rebound and a high-pressure accumulator that stores energy from piston recoil. The stored energy is used on the succeeding strokes, making them faster and harder. Recycling recoil energy increases efficiency and reduces pressure spikes transmitted back to the carrier.

To reduce excess vibration and noise, the HB 3600 comes equipped with the VibroSilenced damping system. Elastic elements between the percussion mechanism and the guide system provide full acoustic insulation, guaranteeing the breaker will emit the lowest noise levels in its weight class. Meanwhile, the HeliCoil thread insert tensioning screw system allows for optimal absorption of tension force within the breaker, even under maximum loads.

For prolonged service life, the HB 3600 features DustProtector II and ContiLube II. The optional DustProtector II feature prevents dust penetration by utilizing a reusable sleeve and wiper that seals the working tool at the base of the breaker to protect the inner mechanism from the damaging effects of dust. ContiLube II is an automatic lubrication system mounted directly on the breaker. Featuring a compact, self-priming pump, ContiLube II eliminates the need to manually grease the breaker before each use. Lubricant levels are easily observed from the driver’s cab.

The HB 3600 uses a working tool with a diameter of 6.7 in. (17 cm) and working length up to 30.3 in. (77 cm). Tool options include the moil point for multi-purpose use, the flat chisel for rock breaking and demolition, and the blunt tool for breaking rock, concrete and oversized material.
