Water District No. 1 is a quasi-municipal agency located in Johnson County KS. Formed in 1957, the agency now provides water to 325,000 residential and 10,000 commercial customers in 15 cities and one rural district.
To anticipate the increased growth in the southern part of the county, the water district has entered into various improvements in an effort to increase capacity and reliability.
In July 2001, the water district awarded a $1.3-million contract to Beemer Construction Co. Inc of Blue Springs, MO, to install a main running parallel with Metcalf Avenue between 183rd and 199th streets. The design engineer contract was awarded to Black and Veatch of Kansas City, MO.
According to Gordon Rames, project engineer of the water district, funding for the project is provided from system development charges and water system general funds.
Rames also stated that “The purpose of the project is to support a future pumping station, reservoir and improve line pressure in the vicinity of 209th Street and Nall Avenue.”
The proceed date for the contract was July 23, 2001, with the anticipated completion date being June 15, 2002. The project extends 11,250 linear ft. (3,429 m).
Beemer installed ductile iron pipe supplied by Griffin Pipe Products Co. of Olathe, KS. The project called for three different sizes. The 24-in. (61 cm) diameter pipe was being used throughout the entire project. The 12-in. (30.5 cm) diameter was used on 300 ft. (91.4 m) of trench and the 8-in. (20.3 cm) diameter pipe will be installed in 40 ft. (12.2 m) of trench.
Beemer’s excavators used on the project include both a Komatsu PC 300 LC and PC 400 LC.
Approximately 110 ft. (33.5 m) of the construction was tunneled. This service was supplied by Augers Unlimited of Shawnee, KS. McAnany Construction Inc. of Shawnee, KS, completed all pavement repairs related to the project.
