The Carolinas Associated General Contractors (AGC) has announced the winners of its annual Pinnacle Awards for outstanding achievement in the commercial construction industry.

The 2001 Carolinas AGC Pinnacle Award winners include:

• Mashburn Construction Co., Columbia, SC, “Best General Contractor”

Mashburn was recognized and awarded for its outstanding contribution to the community and exceptional commitment to safety as well as continuous improvement of its employees through an impressive training effort.

• State Utility Contractors, Monroe, NC, “Best Utility Project”

State Utility Contractors has been recognized for work on modifications to the McAlpine Creek Waste Water Management Facility outside Charlotte, NC, involving formidable technical challenges and environmental issues. State Utility enlarged the facility’s capacity six times over, building a new treatment tank inside an existing 11-acre (4.5 ha) lagoon which remained in full operation.

• Thrift Brothers Inc., Seneca, SC, “Best Highway Project”

Thrift Brothers Inc. has been recognized for work on the 16-mi. “Southern Connector” toll road, involving construction of 45 bridges, seven interchanges and a four-lane divided interstate. The project came in eight months early and within budget.

• Barnhill Contracting Company, Raleigh, NC, “Best Building Project”

Barnhill was awarded for work on the BTI Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, NC. This three-year project transformed Raleigh’s historic Memorial Auditorium into one of the most versatile performing arts complex in the southeastern United States while it continued in full operation. The project was completed on deadline, on budget and with no accidents.

• Hightower Construction Company, Goose Creek, SC, “Best Building Project”

Hightower was recognized for the renovation and restoration of South Carolina’s historic Charleston County Courthouse built in 1792. This American treasure bore the scars of earthquakes, hurricanes and wars, and had to be stabilized in order for workers to gut it safely for a complete seismic retrofit. Hightower completed this project ahead of schedule.

• Crowder Construction Company, Charlotte, NC, engineer Camp Dresser & McKee, Raleigh, NC; and the towns of Apex & Cary, NC, “Best Partnering Project”

The team was awarded for work on “phase one” of the Cary-Apex Water Treatment Plant expansion. All partners worked in an outstanding team effort that resulted in the project being accelerated by nine months and completed with no lost-time injuries.

Winners were selected by a judging panel representing a cross-section of the Carolinas AGC membership: general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and service companies. Judges have the option of giving no award in a given category if they feel it has no truly exceptional candidates that year.

The awards were presented at the Carolinas AGC Annual Convention at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in Florida on Jan. 19, 2002.
