Looking Back — Clement Brothers Company Inc. Builds Carter Dam

Clement Brothers Company Inc. of Hickory, N.C., held a $15.4 million contract to construct the Corps of Engineers Carter Dam Project in Murry County, Ga. The dam is 445 ft. high, then the highest dam east of the Mississippi River, and 2,050 ft. long. The dam was built on the Coosawattee River.

A Northwest 180-D shovel with a 4-1/2 cu. yd. dipper loads a fleet of Euclid R-35 rear dump trucks on April 22, 1967. The contractors used a total of five Northwest 180-D shovels on the Carter Dam project to load a fleet of 29 Euclid R-35 trucks. A total of 12.4 million cu. yds. of rock and 1.8 million cu. yds. of earth were moved.
