Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of eastern Pennsylvania received a $10,000 Chapter Diversity Initiative Grant from ABC to assist in its continuing effort to develop a long-term diversity program. The money will be used in a partnership with the Center for Humanistic Change in Bethlehem, Pa., to provide construction-related training for disadvantaged residents. Participants who complete the 16-week program will be placed in a pre-apprenticeship program with an ABC member firm and graduates will be able to enter into a full apprenticeship.

“This is another example of how ABC is reaching out into the community to get people involved in the commercial and industrial construction industry,” said Bill Fairchild, 2008, ABC national chairman and president of R.W. Murray Co., Manassas, Va. “The success of this program will go a long way towards strengthening diversity in the construction workforce.”

To be eligible for the diversity grant, ABC of Eastern Pennsylvania satisfied six critical elements in the application process: partnering with local organizations representing minorities or women, maintaining a commitment from leadership, using effective practices, securing additional resources from strategic partners, developing models on effective approaches and measuring results.

Each grant application is reviewed by an independent panel. The funding is intended to cover a 12-month period with quarterly reporting.
