Town officials say a Sept. 11 memorial in Long Island that has been delayed for two years is now scheduled to open by next spring.
The Oyster Bay Town Board approved a contract earlier this month to build the Syosset memorial park, which will include two beams from the former World Trade Center. Newsday reported construction could begin in October and be completed by next spring.
Fire District Superintendent Jack Randazzo says firefighters are looking forward to the memorial because it's something for them. The memorial will include the names of department members who died in the line of duty as well as firefighters who died of 9/11-related illnesses.
According to a town official, the total budget for the memorial, including engineering and construction, is $500,000.
