For almost half a century the politicians in Manchester, NH, have been debating and rejecting major proposals to renovate the city’s aging downtown. Last year the Manchester Board of Aldermen finally authorized the construction of the Manchester Civic Center, a sports and entertainment complex that is to be located at a site on Elm Street, the principal street of the city’s downtown. The principal tenant of the complex is to be an American Hockey League franchise.
Gilbane Building Co. of Providence, RI, was awarded the contract to be the project manager, and the architect of the project is the Manchester, NH, firm that has been its partner in many of its New Hampshire projects, the Lavallee/ Brensinger.
The principal excavating subcontractor on the project is Severino Trucking of Candia, NH.
“We have been here since May and much of our excavation work was completed by August though we don’t expect to be completely out of here until August of 2001,” said Jim Stacy, site superintendent for Severino Trucking. “At the height of our excavation work we had four excavators, two dozers, two loaders and a screening plant. Currently on the site we have a Komatsu PC-250 excavator, a Dresser TV-7 dozer, a John Deere 310SE backhoe and a Dresser TS roller.”
The only unusual problem faced by the firm was an unusually high water level. The water problem was addressed by the use of four MultiQuip 125 kW generators and 14 two-in. pumps. The city has many underground streams in the downtown area and not all of them have been surveyed.
