Grimes Battles Weather to Win ROMCO’s Texas Tornado Tour

Two weekends of heavy rain delayed Tommy Grimes’ quest to win ROMCO Equipment Company’s 2000 Texas Tornado Tour, but the weather could not derail him. The San Antonio native needed a 13th place or better showing in front of his hometown fans to wrap up this year’s late-model racing title. His No. 22 car finished fifth.

Downpours on Oct. 21 and Nov. 4 postponed the ROMCO Racing Series’ finale for three weeks. The wait didn’t seem to hurt Doug Lege, who won his third straight ROMCO race and finished second in the season point standings. Lege fell 69 points short Grimes’ final total, but his late-season dominance makes him one of the favorites to win next year’s series.

Fifty-seven different racers participated in the ROMCO Equipment Company sponsor racing series, also known as The Texas Tornado Tour. Late-model racing drivers and their crews race in Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Kyle, TX, as part of the tour. This year’s schedule featured two additional races, bringing the total number of races in 2000 to 16.

The 2001 schedule should be released sometime next year.
