Stephenson Equipment Inc., of Harrisburg, PA, recently took on the full JCB line, and with that move the company has separated into three divisions to handle the various equipment lines it now offers.

“We were approached by JCB this past summer to look at their full line and to be a dealer for them,” said Dennis Heller, president of Stephenson Equipment. “We’ve always been a traditional crane and paving distributor, so this definitely was a new twist for us. Yet, when we flew into Savannah [GA] and took a look at their products and met with their people, we became very excited to handle this line.”

Once the decision was made to add JCB to his company’s lineup, Heller determined that he would need to restructure the business by creating three divisions — each one dedicated to a particular type of equipment. The first division deals with paving and cranes; the second is a company that Stephenson has owned for 40 years called Service Supply, which supplies light and compact equipment and contractor supplies, such as lasers, GPS equipment trowels, etc.; and the third division will handle earthmoving equipment. “By doing this we are able to penetrate the market with excellence and expertise,” said Heller.

Stephenson has virtually doubled its service and parts department by providing 11 service trucks and six parts department professionals — all devoted to supporting JCB equipment for its central Pennsylvania customers.

“Our focus is very clear. We’ve poised ourselves to handle the JCB line with full market penetration as well as excellent service, which also will extend to Central Pennsylvania municipalities,” began Heller. “JCB will provide training to us and our customers. The JCB Group is a very structured organization. They are a well capitalized company and debt-free. And I can’t say this enough … JCB has made it very convenient to carry their line and I’ve been extremely impressed with their commitment.”

So far, so good. Heller said that his sales representatives already have received several customer orders for JCB equipment within just 30 days of representing the line.

Stephenson’s JCB territory includes central Pennsylvania, with the exception of the Philadelphia region. Stephenson also carries Manitowoc, Manitex , CMI, Cedarapids, LeeBoy, Dynapac and Rosco.
