When you’re in charge of millions of tons of garbage that New York City produces, you’ve got to have some powerful and reliable equipment to get the job done. That’s why Billy Aduleit, district transfer station manager, Independent Environmental Services Inc. (IESI), Brooklyn, NY, relies on Caterpillar equipment.

“When you’re in the trash business, you need a Cat,” said Aduleit. “I’ve used Cat equipment for years — it’s dependable, and has proven itself time and time again.”

When IESI was in the market for some new equipment, Aduleit went to his Caterpillar dealer, H.O. Penn, Bronx, NY. Mike Justino set Aduleit up with six new loaders — three 962 wheel loaders, a 950G and 966G wheel loader, and a 973 track loader.

With the proven reliability of his Caterpillar equipment backed by H.O. Penn, Aduleit is confident the machines will “not let us down.”

“With city contracts, we have to have machines that are always up and running. Our operations must run smoothly in order to fulfill our obligations to our city contracts. H.O. Penn is always there with the parts and mobile service trucks. I know I can call them up and get the part a.s.a.p.”

Putting the loaders to use at IESI’s Brooklyn transfer stations, crews work the machines in 12-hour shifts, 24-hours a day six days a week. Continuously loading 100-yd. trailers, the 966G and 950G, equipped with 8-cu. yd. (6 cu m) landfill buckets, cycle eight to nine times. Meanwhile, the 962s, equipped with regular buckets, cycle 22 times to load the trailers.

IESI also uses foam-filled tires to guarantee full productivity. “We use the tires to ensure that we have no tire failure as you would have with air-filled tires, such as flats and sections and, of course, downtime,” said Aduleit. “Basically it’s common sense and common practice to spec out a machine the correct way for your needs. Each station has its own characteristics and you need to make sure that you make the machine work for you and not you work for the machine.”

Pushing the equipment to the limits, IESI maintains a regular preventative maintenance program (PM) and relies on H.O. Penn for parts and analyticals.

“We PM our equipment everyday. If you don’t have a PM program, you can forget about your equipment being in good shape –– it can make or break a machine,” said Aduleit.

IESI collects, transports, recycles and disposes non-hazardous residential, commercial, industrial, construction and demolition waste.
