On Oct. 24, representatives from Terex Cranes and IHI Construction Machinery Limited gathered to celebrate the completion of the 300th crane produced and sold to Terex Cranes, Wilmington Operations.
The celebration was held at Palace Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. The celebration included the presentation of commemorative plaques and pictures from IHI, breaking of the Sake Barrel and speeches from representatives from both organizations.
Attending to represent Terex Cranes were Steve Filipov, president of Terex Cranes; Fil Filipov, former president of Terex Cranes; Craig Lichty, senior vice-president of Business Development; Jim Strobush, sales manager; and Don Alberts, chief engineer.
The relationship between IHI and Terex can be traced back to 1952 when Koehring and Ishiakawajima Heavy Industries established Ishiakawajima Koehring Company as a technical/capital partnership. This partnership lasted until 1977.
Ten years after the end of this partnership Koehring was acquired in 1987 by Terex Corporation. The relationship came full circle when Terex Cranes opened discussions and made the business decision to buy the crawler cranes from IHI.
Discussions regarding the purchase of crawler cranes began in 1998, leading to Terex Cranes purchase of its first unit from IHI in 1999.
This was a prototype HC 80 Luffer for display at ConExpo 1999. Additional HC 80’s were purchased in 1999. In 2000, the HC 110 was added to the product line.
2001 saw the introduction of the HC 50, HC 60 and HC 275 to the product line from IHI. In late 2003, the HC 165 was introduced to the North American market.
The 300th unit produced for Terex is an HC 110. This crane was sold to RTL Equipment of Des Moines, IA.
Terex Cranes is now working with IHI on the development of a new model with a lifting capacity of that between the HC 165 and the HC 275.
“This celebration is the direct result of two companies successfully working together…IHI delivers a reliable crane on a timely basis and Terex Cranes Wilmington Operation provides the lattice boom and customer support element. Together this provides a product that our customer can depend on,” Filipov said.
