Boyd and Sons Machinery, is an Indiana based heavy equipment parts and used equipment dealer.
Committed to stimulating the local economy, creating opportunities for local jobs, and developing a customer focused vision has allowed Boyd and Sons to experience significant growth since joining the industry in 2009. That growth includes adding a second location in the capital city of Indiana, Indianapolis, and increasing the staff from a dozen at the point of purchase, to what is quickly reaching sixty.
With a plan and focus of providing a first class experience for customers and end users, Boyd and Sons prides itself on researching and cultivating lasting relationships with vendors who share a similar vision. The due diligence of researching prospective partners fell in the hands of Boyd and Sons Machinery’s General Manager, Kevin Stephens, who possessed a desire to dig below the surface with companies to truly learn the character of the people with whom they would be doing business. Through his research, the name Gorilla Hammers continued to surface.
Gorilla Hammers, the attachment division of Tech Hydraulics, and a family-owned business similar to Boyd and Sons, offered a product that filled a need demanded by the customer base in the machinery business, and after a brief discussion, Stephens called a meeting. Meeting with Gorilla Hydraulic Breakers’ Bob Tedesco affirmed the desire to partner with Gorilla, and quickly Boyd and Sons began working to acquire a full stock of hydraulic breakers to add to the list of offerings being stocked in their Indiana warehouses.
Since the beginning of the partnership, Boyd and Sons Machinery has received tremendous reviews from their customers in the field, who jumped at the opportunity to purchase a Gorilla product. One of those happy customers is Sam Yoder, of Indian Creek Quarries LLC. Yoder, who operated an excavating company, initially purchased five acres of land in Williams, Indiana, to gain access to gravel for his own operation. Yoder quickly realized the potential of the site and approached the surrounding land owner, David Graber, with the idea of joining forces to expand the quarry operation.
In two years the quarry business exceeded everyone’s expectations and has grown to seventy acres, which produced over half a million tons of crushed limestone in 2013. With more and more demand on the quarries, Yoder realized he needed a hammer to pre-work materials that the crushing and screening plant couldn’t manage.
After experiencing increased frustration with failed parts and malfunctioning equipment with another brand’s hammer, Yoder contacted Boyd and Sons Machinery’s salesman, Eric Evans, for the cure. Evans listened closely to Yoder as he explained the demand and the expectations of the equipment before he recommended the Gorilla GHB155 hydraulic hammer. “The hammer is truly an animal, and we use it to break over 10,000 tons of oversized cap rock a month”, said Yoder before adding that he “loves the Gorilla hammer”.
Utilizing the Gorilla hammer has allowed the quarry to be even more efficient in its efforts of supplying limestone to projects throughout Southern Indiana. The increased production at the quarry has encouraged Yoder to add to his staff, which now includes eleven operators and fifteen truck drivers. Along with Yoder and Graber, Wendall Knepp joined the organization as an operator and investor in the business. Together the owners have been thrilled with the products and service they have received from Boyd and Sons, as well as the attention and expertise shown by Gorilla. “Gorilla has provided outstanding training on their hammers and the knowledge possessed by their field technician was impressive as he worked closely with us on site to set pressures for our hammers” stated Yoder.
Looking to the future, Boyd and Sons hopes to further the footprint for the Gorilla brand by developing lasting relationships with customers who are just as blown away by the extremely dependable products they sell as Yoder has been in the time he has used the hammer. For his part, Yoder states: “I wouldn’t try running our operation without Gorilla”, which is an affirmation for the future and words that the salesman and Boyd and Sons Machinery can share with customers throughout the country who are looking to fill a need just like the local quarry in Southern Indiana.
