Kenworth Truck Co. introduced the WorkCab, a new offering for the dump truck segment of the construction market at the World of Concrete Trade Show in Las Vegas.
The WorkCab applies the no-nonsense cab from Kenworth’s T300 medium-duty model to the robust, proven chassis of Kenworth’s T800 heavy duty model. The vehicle is a combination that provides an economical truck solution for dump truck operators.
The WorkCab retains the features that Kenworth customers have come to expect, yet was designed to be even more cost conscious, according to Brian Lindgren, Kenworth’s vocational and off-highway market segment manager.
“Kenworth has built construction trucks for more than 70 years and the WorkCab has a heritage of innovative engineering and quality behind it,” Lindgren said. “We were able to develop this simplified, hybrid truck to be Kenworth’s most economical Class 8 dump truck. It’s a true workhorse.”
The WorkCab is durable, lightweight and maneuverable, allowing dump truck operators to carry more payload in tight delivery areas. Weight is saved due to the WorkCab’s 285-centimeter (112 in.) bumper-to-back-of-cab (BBC) measurement, plus several lightweight spec options. The short BBC also provides excellent maneuverability — with a wheel cut of 40 degrees with 425/65R22.5 tires. The WorkCab’s short, sloped hood pro- ides excellent visibility.
The WorkCab offers front axle ratings from 6,622 to 9,071 kilograms (14,600 to 20,000 lbs.), and is available with 18,144- to 20,865-kilogram (40,000 to 46,000-lb.) rear axle ratings. The 170-centimeter (67 in.) front-axle-to-back-of-cab dimension allows operators to take full advantage of the front axle rating. The WorkCab initially is available with Caterpillar C-10 and C-12 engines with up to 306 kilowatts (410 hp) and 1,070 Nm (1450 lb./ft.) of torque. Cummins’ ISC, ISL, and ISM engines will be available in late 1999. Eaton/Fuller -8LL, -9H, and -l0C series transmissions are offered.
Rear suspensions from Reyco, Hendrickson, and Chalmers are available to suit the needs of dump truck operators. The WorkCab’s air tanks are located out of the way for easy installation of pusher axles by the dealership or the body installer.
Inside, the cab interior is functional, but not dressy. Kenworth’s “Pinnacle” all-vinyl interior package is durable and easy to clean and maintain.
Drivers will appreciate easy cab entry and exit, thanks to a natural three-step movement. Full-length, cab-mounted grab handles are well-positioned to provide assistance, and low-mounted, pull-type door handles improve ease of entry.
