The Kobelco SK270SR 50,000-lb., zero tail swing excavator has been a valuable addition to Tremson Corporation’s fleet. The NYE stump shear, which came mounted to the Kobelco carrier, has been a reliable, indestructible work tool. The latest addition to the Tremson Corporation excavator fleet is the Kobelco SK350LC, which is being used at the Legoland site for stump pulling. The breakout force of the Kobelco SK350LC has exceeded expectations.

With an assist from its Kobelco excavators, the Tremson Corporation, a land clearing contractor based in Brewster, N.Y., is clearing the way for the new Legoland amusement park, which is scheduled to open in Goshen, N.Y., in 2020. This theme park will be the third Legoland park in North America and is ideally positioned 60 miles northwest of New York City and within two hours of 23 million potential visitors.

The site will include a 250-bedroom hotel, 50 rides shows and attractions, and with a 500-acre site, will have plenty of room for future expansion. The initial investment into the park will be $350 million.

Before the excavation work of a project this size can begin, the site needs to be cleared, and to do that the Tremson Corporation got the call.

Tremson is owned by brothers George and John Tremblay, and the company was founded by their father, George Trembley Sr., in the 1950's. George Tremblay Sr. is still involved in the company today, running the day to day activities of the company's recycling facility.

For site clearing projects, Tremblay's fleet includes log skidders, wood chippers and five excavators. At the future site of Legoland, its primary focus is on clearing wooded areas that are necessary for the site's development. The excavators on site have been purchased by Tremblay over the years from Westchester Tractor in Brewster, N.Y.

Kobelco Helps Clear the Way

In 2016, Tremson Corporation purchased its first Kobelco from Westchester Tractor — an SK270SR 50,000-lb., zero tail swing excavator.

“This machine really fit our needs at that time,” said George Tremblay Jr. “Working in wooded environments, zero tail swing dramatically decreased the footprint of the machine and decreased the opportunity for damaging the excavator. Its size is ideal for easy transport and the excavator is equipped with a NYE stump shear which has been worth its weight in gold.”

The Tremblays were so impressed with the Kobelco that when they decided to expand their fleet, they purchased a Kobelco SK350LC from Westchester Tractor.

“On this site, we are using this 80,000-pound excavator for stump pulling. Thus far it has been very popular with our operators. They really like the feel of the controls and the 350 is giving us a lot of power in the stump pulling application. Particularly in this type of application we are very happy with Kobelco's INDR system [Integrated Noise and Dust Reduction cooling system].”

In contrast to conventional systems, which use a large fan near the intake port to cool the engine, INDR creates a “wind pathway” that naturally introduces air into the system with a fan located farther inside the machine, which makes it possible to reduce noise, heat and prevent dust penetration. This INDR system allows Kobelco to build excavators that are much quieter than regulatory requirements dictate. This was accomplished by offsetting the fan and moving it farther inside the machine so there is no direct line between the fan and the air outside. Soundwaves generated by the fan and engine hit several internal duct walls and lose most of their energy before it reaches outside, according to the manufacturer.

“We have developed a strong working relationship with Jeff Underhill, our sales rep with Westchester Tractor. Jeff introduced us to the Kobelco product and we have had no disappointments. Product service and support has been excellent. Jeff and his team at Westchester Tractor have demonstrated the ability to match our needs with the right equipment,” Tremblay said.
