Construction Equipment Guide

Komatsu America Corp.’s D475A-5SD super dozer was developed to provide productivity, reliability and operator comfort for the mining and quarry industries. The super dozer pushes more material without a proportionate increase in operating weight and horsepower due to its blade design. The D475A-5SD’s 58.9-cu.-yd. (45 cu m) super dozer blade provides 15 percent more production than a conventional U-blade in level dozing.

The Tier II D475A-5SD has an operating weight of 249,560 lbs. (113,198 kg) and features a powerful, clean Komatsu SAA12V140E-3 turbocharged, air to air after-cooled diesel engine which provides a maximum net output of 890 hp (664 kW). The engine is Tier II EPA, EU and Japan emissions certified while continuing to provide reliability and fuel economy. The extra-low machine profile provides machine balance and a low center of gravity.

Automatic Lockup Torque Converter

For greater efficiency during long pushes, the lockup mode allows the system to automatically engage the torque converter lockup clutch. Locking up the torque converter transmits all the engine power directly to the transmission, increasing ground speed and thus achieving efficiencies equal to direct drive. The results of this efficient use of power are less fuel consumption, faster cycle times and more material moved.

Electronic Controlled Power Train for Smooth Operation

The D475A-5SD uses a power train electronic control system that greatly improves operation and productivity. Electronic Controlled Modulation Valves (ECMV) ensure comfortable and productive dozing. The ECMV automatically controls stroke ratio of steering clutches and brakes depending on degree of load, enabling smooth dozing and turning. When dozing downhill, the ECMV automatically controls steering clutches and brakes depending on incline of machine and load, reducing counter-steering and producing smooth dozing operation.

Easy Operator Control

Komatsu’s ergonomically designed Palm Command Control System (PCCS) gives operators maximum control, offering a relaxed posture and fine control to further reduce operator fatigue. PCCS provides precise and responsive control to both the tracks and blade in direct proportion to control lever PCCS movement.

Thumb push buttons and preset travel speed selection simplifies transmission gear shifting. The preset travel speed selection function enables the operator to select fore and aft travel speed from the preset patterns, which reduces manual gear shifting frequency during machine operations. Due to this, combined with the auto-downshift function, gear shifting time during repeated round trip operations is reduced.

Cab Design Keeps Noise Levels at Bay

The D475A-5SD features a 70 dB(A) low noise design with a high quality cab interior that is fully lined with sound absorbing material. The cab has an insulated double floor to reduce power train noise, thicker glass in the door and increased pressurization from improved window seals. Cool air inlet ducts are lined with sound absorbing material that direct the air to the hydraulic fan. Engineered baffles on the machine absorb and reduce the fan noise, while a double insulated engine hood is equipped with additional sound absorbing material to further reduce engine noise.

Vehicle Health Monitoring System

The dozer is equipped with the latest Vehicle Health Monitoring System (VHMS) technology, which sends machine operating information to a secure Web site utilizing wireless technology. Data such as operating hours, cautions, maintenance alerts and system trend data are relayed to the web application for analysis.

The VHMS fleet monitoring system allows for remote diagnosis, increases machine availability and provides a wealth of additional information to drive business efficiency and productivity.
