Construction Equipment Guide

Komatsu America Corp.’s new series of D65 crawler dozers, which includes the D65EX-15, D65PX-15 and D65WX-15, was developed for heavy dozing and grading applications. All major components, including hydraulics, power train, mainframe and operator cab are engineered by Komatsu.

The latest crawler dozers feature a powerful and clean Komatsu SAA6D114E-5 turbocharged after-cooled diesel engine, which provides a maximum net output of 205 hp (153 kW) with hydraulic fan at maximum speed: 190 hp (142 kW). The new engine is EPA Tier III and EU Stage 3A emission regulation-certified and has horsepower and torque output that meets or exceeds previous Tier II engines.

Electronically controlled with direct fuel injection, the engine provides increased fuel economy. Improved fuel filtration with water separator keeps injectors clean and engine at full power. The hydraulic-driven reversible engine-cooling fan conserves up to 15 hp (11 kW), thereby reducing fuel consumption and providing great productivity in a quiet operating environment, according to the manufacturer.

These dozers are equipped with the latest Komtrax technology, which enables them to send machine operating information to a secure Web site utilizing wireless technology. Hour meter, location, cautions and maintenance alerts — to name a few of its features — are relayed to the web application for analysis. The Komtrax fleet monitoring system increases machine availability, reduces the risk of machine theft, allows for remote diagnosis by the distributor, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiency and productivity.

Special features of the new crawler dozers include:

Strong Blade Capacity

High-tensile strength, wear-resistant steel has been incorporated into the front and sides of the blade for increased durability.

• The D65EX-15 Straight-Tilt Dozer has an operating weight of 44,710 lbs. (20,280 kg) and a blade capacity of 5.09 cu. yd. (3.9 cu m).

• The D65EX-15 Semi-U Dozer has an operating weight of 44,710 lbs. and a blade capacity of 7.34 cu. yd. (5.6 cu m).

• The D65PX-15 Straight-Tilt Dozer has an operating weight of 46,300 lbs. (21,001 kg) with a blade capacity of 4.83 cu. yd. (3.7 cu m).

• The D65WX-15 Straight-Tilt Dozer has an operating weight of 46,610 lbs. (21,142 kg) with a blade capacity of 4.83 cu. yd. (6.2 cu m). This machine has the track gauge of the PX and track-on-ground of the EX.

• The D65WX-15 Semi-U Dozer has an operating weight of 46,610 lbs. and a blade capacity of 8.15 cu. yd. (6.2 cu m). This machine has the track gauge of the PX and track-on-ground of the EX.

• The D65WX-15 Power-Angle-Tilt Dozer has an operating weight of 47,200 lbs. (21,409 kg) and a blade capacity of 5.75 cu. yd. (4.4 cu m). The machine has the track gauge of PX and track-on-ground 12 in. (30 cm) longer than the EX.

New Cab Design

The new D65 crawler dozers provide a quiet, comfortable environment, allowing the operator to concentrate on the work at hand and increase productivity. New hexagonal cab design and large tinted glass windows provide front, side and rear visibility. Air filters combined with a higher internal air pressurizer prevent dust from entering the cab.

The operator cab is mounted on four, newly designed, viscous fluid dampers to reduce shock and vibration while traveling over adverse conditions, which conventional mounting systems are unable to absorb. All of the machines use a newly designed suspension seat, with fore and aft sliding rails and suspension springs that have been designed to increase strength and rigidity. Air-suspension seat is now available as an option.

Joystick Controls for Low Effort Operation

Komatsu’s new ergonomically designed Palm Command Control System (PCCS) gives operators complete control. The palm command travel joystick provides the operator with a relaxed posture and fine control without operator fatigue. Transmission gear shifting is simplified with thumb push buttons. The travel control console has adjustment fore aft, and height.

For improved rear visibility during reverse operations, the operator can adjust the seat 15 degrees to the right. The blade control joystick uses the PPC (Proportional Pressure Control) valve which, combined with the Komatsu hydraulic system, enables precise control. Engine speed is controlled using electronic throttle control dial, providing ease of operation, while eliminating maintenance of linkage and joints.

Electronic Control Powertrain

The D65 dozers utilize an electronic control power train system that improves ease of operation and productivity. Powerful turns under load are achieved through the Hydrostatic Steering System (HSS) which is driven by an independent hydraulic pump and motor to maintain power to both tracks. When the machine turns, the outside track moves faster and the inside more slowly, enabling smooth and powerful turns.

Counter-rotation is available for minimum turning radius which provides increased maneuverability. Shock-free steering reduces machine vibration and minimizes operator fatigue.
