Leading National Highway Contractors Challenge Peers to Take Safety Certification Exam

Tue July 23, 2019 - National Edition
ARTBA

Three major transportation construction contractors are calling on their industry peers to commit at least 25 employees annually to earn the Safety Certification for Transportation Project Professionals (SCTPP) credential before the end of 2019, in 2020, and beyond.

American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Chairman Bob Alger, chairman of The Lane Construction Corporation; Ross Myers, chairman and CEO of Allan Myers, and David Walls, president and CEO of Austin Industries, together issued the challenge. Myers and Walls co-chair the commission overseeing the program's operations.

The SCTPP was launched in fall 2016 by top industry executives and safety advocates via ARTBA's Foundation to reduce and even eliminate the nearly 50,000 people who die or are injured annually on or near U.S. transportation infrastructure construction projects. It is aimed at workers, supervisors, foremen, inspectors, designers, planners, equipment operators, manufacturers, materials suppliers and owners who will learn the core competencies necessary to identify and mitigate potentially life-threatening onsite risks.

The safety certification continues to gain traction within the transportation construction sector. As of July 2019, 383 professionals from 83 companies and agencies in 37 states and D.C. have passed the exam and earned the credential.

"Superior Construction prioritizes safety as a core value within our organization," said Bryan Stone, the company's safety director. "The safety certification program allows us to demonstrate that value by challenging our leaders in both the office and field to prepare for and earn this important credential."

In May 2018, the SCTPP earned the "seal of approval" from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI); it's the only internationally-accredited safety program in the transportation construction industry.
