The New York State Chapter Inc., Associated General Contractors (AGC), has awarded a record 19 scholarships in its 2002/03 competition.
Since it began in 1988, the chapter’s Scholarship Program has granted nearly $475,000 to 216 deserving undergraduate and graduate students from across New York State.
“The New York State Chapter, Associated General Contractors, is very pleased to award a record number of scholarships from among a highly qualified field of applicants,” said Jeffrey A. Hanlon, chairman of the Chapter’s Scholarship & Student Chapters Committee and president of Slate Hill Constructors Inc., of Warners, NY. “We look forward to welcoming these bright young people into our industry in a few years. We know they will make a positive contribution to the highway construction industry and to New York State.”
The Chapter awards four named scholarships: the Anthony S. Santaro Memorial Scholarship; James M. Kernan Memorial Scholarship; Nicholas B. Badami Memorial Scholarship; and the J. Keith Waters Memorial Scholarship.
With the exception of the Anthony S. Santaro scholarship, which is worth $3,000, all scholarship winners receive $2,500.
Among the 19 students are 10 multiple-time winners, including a record three students winning a chapter scholarship for the fourth time, two students winning for the third time and five second-time winners.
This year’s winners are studying at 11 colleges and universities as diverse as Hudson Valley Community College, Cornell University, SUNY Farmingdale, and the University at Buffalo.
The chapter’s scholarship program is open to full-time college undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in construction or civil engineering with the intention of a career in the highway construction industry.
Only students who are residents of New York State are eligible for the scholarships, however they may attend a college or university anywhere in the United States.
The program is funded solely by the Anthony S. Santaro AGC Golf Classic, held each June at Lafayette Country Club in Jamesville, NY.
