New York AGC Holds Annual Charitable Golf Tournament

Mon August 01, 2005 - National Edition
Profile

If there were a theme to this year’s Anthony S. Santaro AGC Scholarship Classic it would have been “I’m Hot, Hot, Hot.”

Temperatures in the mid-90s with very high humidity made finishing this year’s tournament (which took more than five hours) more a test of endurance rather than skill.

The event this year was held at the Turning Stone Casino Resort on two of its world-class golf courses — The Shenandoah and The Kaluhyat. This 16th annual charitable event raises money to benefit the AGC Scholarship Fund, which was established in 1988 to provide financial assistance to college students who have an interest in pursuing a career in New York State’s construction industry. More than $575,000 in scholarships has been granted since 1988, maintaining the fund status as the largest state industry effort of its kind in the United States. Contractors, equipment distributors, industry suppliers and New York State DOT officials work hand-in-hand to make this event an astounding success.

As has been the case for a number of years Caterpillar provided the barbecue lunch that was served.

Each golfer was presented with a player’s pack that was amply supplied with golf balls, tees, towels, etc. The player pack donations were supplied by Advance Testing Company, Barrett Paving Materials, Caterpillar Financial, Delaney Construction, and Cardona & Sons Inc.

Financial donations were broken down into three categories as follows:

Platinum sponsors: D.A. Collins Construction Companies, Lancaster Development and Milton CAT.

Gold sponsors: Barrett Paving Materials, Callanan Industries, Elderlee Inc., The Fort Miller Company, Fox Charles & Kowalewski, Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Contractors, Hayward Baker Inc., the Ingersoll-Rand Company, Walter Pratt & Sons, Slate Hill Contractors, Syracuse Castings, Tracey Road Equipment, Vantage Equipment and Vector Construction.

Silver sponsors: Fuller & O’Brien and Hudson River Construction

Individual holes had sponsors that included: CCI Companies, D.R. Construction Materials, Hyundai Construction Equipment, Kawasaki, Kobelco, New Holland and Transit Construction Corp.

The signs for the individual hole sponsors were provided by Work Zone Safety Specialists Inc.

Each year the Board of Governors of the Empire State Contractors Association donates $2,500 to the scholarship fund in memory of James M. Kernan.

A dynamic auction held after dinner each year raises in excess of $10,000. Donations to this year’s auction were made by: Barton & Loguidice, Hudson River Construction, J.C. Smith Inc., Syracuse Castings, Cardona & Sons, Syrstone Inc., Straight Line Industries, Construction Equipment Guide, Five Star Equipment, Tilcon New York Inc., Jack Conger, QCI Asset Management, Anderson Equipment, DiCerbo Associates, Walter S. Pratt & Sons, Peckham Materials and Tracey Road Equipment.

Four on-course refreshment stands were provided by Gateway Equipment.

All golf carts were sponsored by Anderson Equipment.

The AGC also recognized Materials Corp. for their $1,000 donation to the scholarship endowment fund.

This year the AGC received 32 applications for the 2005 scholarship program. Applications were received from more than 15 colleges and universities. The AGC encourages anyone who knows a student in a construction curriculum to recommend its program to him or her.
