The New York State Chapter Inc., Associated General Contractors (NYS AGC), has been elected to the 2003 Associations Advance America Honor Roll, a national awards competition sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives in Washington, D.C.

The NYS AGC received the award for its part in hosting the first Capital District Construction Career Days in April 2002. Construction Career Days was a two-day event designed to introduce area high school students to the wide variety of career opportunities in the construction industry. AGC members loaned $4-million worth of heavy equipment for the event; some of the equipment was static and the students were able to operate 13 different pieces, including backhoes and mini-excavators.

Now in its 13th year, the Associations Advance America Awards program recognizes associations that propel America forward — with innovative projects in education, skills training, standards-setting, business and social innovation, knowledge creation, citizenship, and community service. Although association activities have a powerful impact on everyday life, they often go unnoticed by the general public.

“AGC’s program truly embodies the spirit of the Associations Advance America campaign. It is an honor and an inspiration to showcase this activity as an example of the many contributions associations are making to advance American society,” said ASAE President Michael S. Olson.

Working with the Federal Highway Administration, the New York State Department of Transportation, trade groups, other associations and private enterprises, the NYS AGC signed on to plan and host the two-day Construction Career event to highlight the growing need for construction workers at all levels and skills — from high school-educated trade apprentices to civil engineers with four-year degrees. Construction plays a vital role in New York state’s economic vitality.
