The Port Authority of Vienna Township, located near Youngstown, OH, recently enlisted the services of Kirila Contractors Inc. of Brookfield, OH, for a large commercial construction project. The $15-million proposal involves building a new 200,000-sq.-ft. (18,581 sq m) facility within the township. A major occupant of this facility will be The Timken Company, a leader in bearings and steel, whose corporate offices are located in nearby Akron.
On Site
During the recently completed land clearing portion of the Vienna Township project, Kirila Contractors was faced with the dilemma of needing to remove trees and brush from dozens of acres at the site. The company assigned several hydraulic excavators to this task: a Caterpillar 245, a Komatsu PC300 and a New Holland EC 215, each coupled with a heavy-duty thumb, 34 in. (86 cm) wide on the Komatsu and New Holland, and 36 in. (91 cm) wide on the Caterpillar. The operators were impressed with how durable and reliable the thumbs, manufactured by AIM Attachments, proved to be in some tough situations.
Bill Kirila Sr. was very satisfied with the increased efficiency in brush-pile removal tasks thanks to the mechanical thumbs. “They work pretty well,” he said, content in the fact that phase one proceeded without a problem.
AIM “overbuilds” its thumbs with T-1 steel structures, hardened steel bushings, large alloy pins and thick T-1 steel tines with serrated edges for advanced gripping ability. The versatility in the design is evident in that there are three working positions: 60 degrees, 90 degrees and 120 degrees, as well as the ability of the thumb to be folded up when not in use.
Ned Herald, the Midwest region sales representative with AIM Attachments, on site with Kirila Contractors, agreed. “I take great pride in the fact that we make a top-notch product. It gives our customers peace-of-mind to know that we stand behind the attachments we sell.”
The Outlook
Finding a reliable business partner is a difficult task, but recent fortunes make the future look bright for Kirila Contractors. When asked about continued business with AIM Attachments, Kirila confirmed, “Yes, we’re currently looking into quick couplers and other attachments.” He feels that successful projects, like this one in Vienna Township, will make the relationship between Kirila Contractors and AIM Attachments one that will continue for years to come.
The Port Authority of Vienna Township project is currently proceeding into the next phase, where the building structure will begin to take shape. The current deadline for completion is Jan. 1, 2001. As usual, Kirila Contractors is confident that the job will be finished on time and on budget.
The Kirila family founded the company that now specializes in excavating, earth moving, road and utility construction, paving and hazardous materials operations more than 30 years ago on the basis of quality construction and timely completion of projects.
Currently, Kirila Contractors employs a staff of over 200 laborers, a work force that offers innumerable years of diverse experience in the construction industry. The equipment and machine holdings have expanded to boast some 200 items, and are growing steadily.
