Pioneer Construction, one of the largest full-service general contracting, design-build, and construction management companies in Michigan, has received the 2009 Construction Safety Award of Excellence from the Western Michigan Chapter of the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC), a construction industry association.

“Assuring a safe work environment for all of our employees and business partners has always been a top priority at Pioneer. Our people are our greatest asset. This recognition is clearly a reflection of our team’s efforts to improving safety on every project,” said Tim Schowalter, president and CEO of Pioneer Construction. “Pioneer is proud to be recognized for this commitment and will continue to implement safety-oriented programs and policies at all of our work sites.”

The ABC Construction Safety Award of Excellence is the highest safety honor presented by the organization. It recognizes companies with exemplary safety performance and programs, as well as companies that exhibit a continued commitment to job site safety by maintaining outstanding safety programs, policies and procedures. Member companies that receive the award must demonstrate to an ABC evaluation team that safety for their employees is an on-going effort and concern.

“Western Michigan ABC is proud to congratulate Pioneer Construction for its success in maintaining a very high level of construction workplace safety,” said John Doherty, president and CEO of the Western Michigan Chapter of ABC. “Pioneer has truly demonstrated its dedication to ensuring a safe environment for all employees, and it is an honor to recognize that achievement with our 2009 Construction Safety Award of Excellence.”

Pioneer also was recognized for three projects that received ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards, recognizing outstanding construction projects from across the nation.

The company received an Excellence in Construction award in Renovation, which acknowledges renovation of existing buildings. The Fitzgerald renovation project transformed a former YMCA building, a classic colonial revival building originally constructed in 1915, into luxury condos in downtown Grand Rapids, Mich.

For the Pre-Engineered Building category, Pioneer won the Excellence in Construction award for its work on the Grand Valley State University Laker Turf Building. This building was designed to provide more recreational opportunities to the college’s student population. The complex consists of 138,000 gross sq. ft. including a six lane 300 m indoor track with nine sprint lanes, multi-purpose rooms for various student activities, student locker/shower rooms and more. The entire building also is LEED Certified.

The Excellence in Construction award for Structural Steel Erection was granted to Pioneer due to the work done on the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital located in Grand Rapids, Mich. Today, the hospital is a regional referral center dedicated to improving the health and lives of children and families.
