Paul Wever, president of Paul Wever Construction Equipment (PWCE), Goodfield, IL-based, is confident that his company can address just about any type of mechanical or production problem for most construction needs. So, when Kevin Healy of Slattery Skanska Inc. contacted PWCE with his construction dilemma, PWCE was able to deliver.
Slattery was asked to install a ventilation system, called the Fan Plant, in the New York City Subway System. This system would manipulate air flow in the event of a fire.
The installation job would require digging through a mixture of old building foundations and river backfill. Slattery had a Cat 350L that was unable to dig at the depth required for the application. Having seen ads in different trade publications, Healy contacted PWCE.
After considering the dig depth needed and the size of the machine, PWCE determined an EX 110, 24-ft. (7.2 m) Extendavator would be the optimum solution. The Extendavator is a long-reach attachment specifically designed for excavators. It requires no additional counterweight and can be installed in as little as two hours, reports PWCE. With this attachment, the dig depth would be increased from 31 to 55 ft. (9.4 to 17 m). “The extra digging depth made the job possible,” said Healy.
Healy was pleased with the outcome when the project was complete.
