When you’re a teenager, some career paths seem more clear than others. Those who want to be a doctor, lawyer or accountant can easily uncover the kind of training they will need.
But what about those who want to work in the construction or heavy equipment industries?
That’s the idea behind the AGC’s Construction Career Days.
The most recent of these took place in Humble, TX, and gave high school students in the Houston area a chance to visit with professionals in the industry and learn more about the opportunities they have to offer.
ROMCO Equipment Company representatives saw the event as a chance to answer questions, promote the heavy equipment distributor’s scholarship program for mechanics and even let students take the controls of several machines.
More than 5,100 young people participated in Career Days between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 eclipsing the combined attendance of similar events in Dallas, Austin and the Rio Grande Valley.
Students visiting ROMCO’s outdoor demonstration area literally hopped in the driver’s seat of a Hitachi excavator, Ingersoll-Rand roller, Champion motor grader or Volvo wheel loader and went to work.
Those interested in pursuing a career as a heavy equipment mechanic received information on ROMCO’s scholarship program set up through Universal Technical Institute (UTI).
Scholarship recipients work part-time while attending the technical school and full-time upon graduation. Combined bonuses in the program give students $4,000 to pay for the tools they will need to get started.
The most important lesson of the day was that the construction industry offers a variety of careers and that working in the industry is a viable option.
