The Lee County Port Authority selected Phoenix Construction Services of Panama City, FL, to begin $30 million worth of site preparation work for the Midfield Terminal Complex at Southwest Florida International Airport. Site preparation is slated to begin in early February pending receipt of the final permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The contract includes the clearing of 1,100 acres, the excavation and embankment of 3 million cubic yards of earth, the installation of a stormwater drainage system and other related site-preparation activities. The facility is scheduled to be completed in 2005.

Phoenix Construction Services won the contract with a low bid of $29.7 million. The firm was established in 1982 and handles more than $70 million worth of construction annually. Current projects include a concrete ramp and fueling facility at Fort Lauderdale International Airport and a new taxiway and storm drainage project at Birmingham International Airport.

The new Midfield Terminal Complex will be built south of the airport’s runway and includes a two-story, 28-gate terminal, a new taxiway, related roadways and southern access to I-75. DMJM Aviation is managing the design and construction of the $386 million project, which is being funded with grants from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Florida Department of Transportation; airline rents and fees; and other airport revenue, including bonds.

Southwest Florida International Airport opened in 1983 and is one of the fastest growing airports in the nation, serving more than 5 million passengers annually. The airport is located on Florida’s southwest coast and serves the vacation destinations of Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Naples, Punta Gorda and Marco Island.
