Construction Equipment Guide

When you’re in the hot mix asphalt business, staying abreast of the latest equipment technology can often mean the difference between landing the job and coming in a close, but no cigar, second. Yet it can be hard to stay on top of this ever-changing industry when you’re out on the job site for 10 to 12 hours a day paving a new airport runway, supplying thousands of tons of asphalt to a major tunnel project or completing a parking lot at a local high school.

To keep his customers updated on the newest technology and machines, Mike Chenet of CC&T, Folcroft, PA, the Wirtgen dealer for New Jersey, Southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware frequently schedules equipment demonstrations and training seminars.

During a recent demonstration of the Wirtgen W 2200, crews from A.E. Stone Inc., Egg Harbor Twp., NJ, tried out Wirtgen’s newest and largest milling machine on an $11-million runway expansion project at the Atlantic City, NJ, airport.

Impressed with the performance of the W 2200, Tom Ritter, owner of A.E. Stone bought the similar yet smaller Wirtgen W 2000.

Ritter, who has owned three other Wirtgen milling machines, said he counts on the machine’s dependability and maneuverability. “We’ve found the Wirtgen machines to be very reliable, just like the service we get from CC&T,” said Ritter.

In addition, he said, the W 2000’s precise grade-controls have helped crews perform the job as budgeted. The maneuverability of the W 2000 and the machine’s joystick controls also has helped crews increase production.

Taking delivery of the W 2000 two months ago, the machine’s performance, said Ritter, has been what he anticipated. “Other than routine maintenance, things have been what we expected — dependable, which is what we’ve come to rely on with the Wirtgen machines,” he said.

A regular participant in the annual CC&T-sponsored Wirtgen seminars, A.E. Stone service technicians also have become confident with the machine’s components and capable of doing a lot of their own repair work. “The thing about A.E. Stone,” said Chenet, “is that they’re all interested in doing things the right way by encouraging on-going education for their support people. We appreciate working with people who are interested and open minded in dealing with new technology.”
