Raised in Connecticut, Dale Hardisty and Rob Bedard gained their first experience in the construction industry as teenagers.
At the age of 19, Hardisty got his foot in the door as a laborer with Garrity Asphalt Reclaiming and quickly progressed to become a reclaimer and milling operator. At the age of 18, Bedard joined the construction industry straight out of high school as a paving operator with a local paving contractor.
As they grew older, both desired more earning potential and began their own sealing and asphalt repair jobs on the side, separately. As demand for their side jobs increased, they found their business paths would often cross. As a result, they would consistently rely on one another for materials and expertise. Their friendship continued to evolve and in 2014, Hardisty and Bedard decided to officially combine forces and start a joint business venture: Asphalt Repair Solutions Inc.
Rapid Growth
Asphalt Repair Solutions originally consisted of two pick-up trucks, a couple of mini-excavators, a sealing machine, a little dump truck, and just Hardisty and Bedard. At the start, the company specialized in sealing driveways and small patchwork, but in only three years, however, the company has grown to be a major industry game-player.
Today, it provides commercial, residential, industrial and municipal government customers with an array of services, specializing in asphalt paving, milling, grading, hot crack filling, sealcoating, curbing and line striping, as well as snowplowing and removal.
“We owe so much of it to Stone Construction, located in Southbury, Conn.,” said Hardisty of his company's rapid growth. “They were and still are such loyal customers. They pushed us to do new jobs that were out of our realm of services at the time, but trusted us to do it. As our demand for larger, more complex jobs grew, so did our equipment fleet and employee base.”
Expanding Equipment Fleet
“There was no question whom to turn to when shopping for paving equipment,” said Bedard. “W.I. Clark, hands down, has the best reputation for service and sells top of the line equipment.”
Bedard said that his company's first equipment purchase from W.I. Clark was in 2015, when Asphalt Repair Solutions bought a used LeeBoy 8510 paver and a Hamm HH12 VO oscillating roller. Since then, the company has purchased a John Deere 35 mini-excavator, a John Deere backhoe, a new LeeBoy 8616 paver, a new Hamm HD14 VV roller, and a LeeBoy tack trailer.
In 2016, Hardisty and Bedard were on the hunt for a milling machine with low hours and good condition, that could fit the company's budget.
“After tirelessly searching throughout the U.S. with no luck, in March of this year, we finally found a Wirtgen milling machine in Italy,” Hardisty said. “So, I flew to Italy to personally check out the machine [with W.I. Clark's assistance], and after three days spent with the seller, I purchased it and had it shipped to the U.S. It was important for us to purchase a Wirtgen, not only because of Wirtgen's stellar reputation for A+ paving products, but also because W.I. Clark specializes in the Wirtgen Group line, and they would be able to provide us the continuous maintenance, repair and parts we'd need to own such a machine.”
Bedard added that Carl Roderick, sales representative of W.I. Clark, has worked closely with Asphalt Repair Solutions since its first purchase.
“He is just as dedicated as we are in helping our company achieve our goals and making us grow,” Bedard said. “His knowledge of the paving industry and equipment sets him apart from the rest. He's able to study the line of work and pair us with the machine that is best suited for the application.”
About Asphalt Repair Solutions
Among Asphalt Repair Solutions' jobs for 2017 include, but not limited to, the CVS pharmacy parking lot in Monroe, Conn.; Horizon Homes in Naugatuck, Conn.; and Heritage Village in Southbury, Conn. — all of which were total reclamation/grade/paving jobs.
W.I. Clark's Rodderick said, “From my perspective, (and I deal with people all of the time), what I think is really interesting about Asphalt Repair Solutions Inc. is that their young age, accompanied with their rapid growth, and most importantly the diversity of the services they provide, is a rare commodity.
“Their name may be Asphalt Repair Solutions, but that's just what they started out doing,” Rodderick added. “They have tremendously gone above and beyond that to cover all realms of the asphalt industry. They have such determination and motivation. To hop on a plane and fly to Italy to purchase the right machine is a perfect example of their initiative. They are the epitome of go-getters, and that is a rare quality to see in this day in age.”
Asphalt Repair Solutions Inc. is located in Botsford, Conn.
