Relationships. In business, that is what makes a difference. Nickolas Savko Sons Inc. is dedicated to building strong relationships by delivering quality and efficiency in every facet of its work. Many central Ohio developers have realized that they have partnered with a company that believes in those ideals.

With a solid reputation built by meeting and exceeding its clients’ goals, Nickolas Savko & Sons Inc. reflects the character of a family-owned business that has been a fixture in central Ohio since 1946.

Nickolas Savko started the contracting company with basement excavations and concrete placements in a pick-up truck with only a handful of employees. Over the years, Savko has grown into one of the largest site development contractors in the region, with more than 200 employees and an equipment yard boasting more than 250 pieces of heavy equipment and trucks. The company’s steady growth can be attributed to the relationships it has built in Ohio over the past 55 years.

Currently, more than 85 percent of the company’s annual sales come from repeat business. Savko now specializes in a diverse field of tasks, including site development, earthmoving, street construction, underground utilities and recycling operations.

Savko serves a 12-county area throughout central Ohio from a 6,000-sq.-ft. office and 30,000-sq.-ft. warehouse facility on a 17-acre (7 ha) site in northwest Columbus. The company offers a first-rate computer system to manage all of its estimating, scheduling, accounting, and equipment tracking.

On Site

Savko is involved in a variety of projects this time of year. Recently, one of Savko’s crews concluded work on a site development project for Olympus Homes in the Morse Road area of northeast Columbus. The Kensington Woods job included storm sewer and catch basin work, grading, as well as other site development-related tasks for the soon-to-be residential community. With the earthmoving job on the 10-acre (4 ha) site now complete, the project has quickly moved into the next phase and buildings are already taking shape.

Another site development project, for a residential community as well, is under way in the Grove City area of Columbus. This project includes the development of a large residential area for Deluxe Homes. Savko has been selected to do the grading, sanitary line construction and storm/catch basin work for the planned community project.

During the recently completed site preparation portion of the Kensington Woods project, Savko was faced with the dilemma of needing to load and place pipe, move manhole sections, and handle other bulky objects. Problems had arisen in the past with the standard-duty utility forks that are commonly found on the market. Dale Collins, a project manager for Savko, turned to a local company, AIM Attachments.

“We were looking for some heavy-built forks,” recalled Collins. “We’re glad we requested the beefed-up design.” With help from the engineering department at AIM, Savko received two sets of the custom pallet and utility forks.

Ned Herald, regional sales manager, of AIM Attachments, is proud of the result. “It was nice to be able to develop a product that would solve the recurring equipment issues they were experiencing. Besides, each attachment comes with a one-year warranty to give our customers that added peace-of-mind.”

Assigned to the pipe/manhole handling job at Kensington Woods was a John Deere 644G coupled with the new AIM forks. Machine Operator Bob Blackmon found the forks easy to connect and maneuver, and with the low, reinforced backframe, visibility was not an issue. At the conclusion of the project, Collins felt the forks had passed with flying colors. “In some cases in the past we’ve had to discard forks that were too damaged or worn out, this new design should last a long time,” he said.

The Outlook

Finding a reliable business partner can be a difficult task, but the future looks bright for Nickolas Savko & Sons Inc.

Successful product developments helped to establish a relationship between Savko and AIM Attachments that will continue for years to come.

Savko is currently involved in a massive project including the site development, street and concrete work at the Polaris Fashion Mall site in north Columbus.
