Caterpillar Inc.'s high-production B-Series tandem vibratory rollers includes the CB64B, CB66B and CB68B models. These machines are 13 to 15.4 ton (12 to 14 t) compactors that feature wider drum widths, high-flow water spray system, increased operator comfort and enhanced technology to help operators and machines perform at higher levels.

Many of the technological enhancements are provided through the optional Cat compaction control. Pass-count and temperature mapping systems combine infrared temperature sensors with GPS mapping to keep the operator informed of current mat temperatures, machine position, pass-count and pass coverage. This intuitive system greatly enhances nighttime performance, and also records information for future process analysis and quality control documentation. When combined with drum edge and drum surface lighting, Cat compaction control helps extend the workday and increase daily production by optimizing jobsite awareness in low-light conditions, according to the manufacturer.

“Machine to machine” communication is another technological enhancement that improves jobsite efficiency. The system helps keep rolling patterns in sync by sharing coverage and pass-count maps between the operating displays of multiple machines. By viewing the color display, operators can monitor areas of coverage and the number of passes made. If a trailing operator sees an area of missed coverage, they can easily pick it up to ensure the entire rolling pattern gets the attention that is needed. This system is extremely helpful when performing echelon compaction when multiple machines are executing a five or seven pass rolling pattern.

In addition, these rollers perform well in vibratory or static mode, enabling a single machine to perform breakdown, intermediate and finishing work. The rollers are well-suited to all types of mix designs and applications. They provide high variation of amplitudes for breakdown and intermediate work, while their high static linear loads deliver enhanced results for finishing work. Typical applications include highways, city streets, county roads, lane additions, industrial sites, overlays, airport runways and other production-sized paving jobs.

Efficient Power and Eco-Mode

The Cat C4.4 engine meets U.S. EPA Tier IV Final and EU Stage IV emissions and provides 142 hp (106 kW) of power. Automatic eco-mode operates at a variable engine speed to deliver excellent fuel economy and lower sound levels.

Keeping Operators Productive

Working in unfavorable conditions is typical in the paving business, but the operating station helps keep operators comfortable and productive.

Visibility and comfort are enhanced by the standard 180 degree seating and optional 360 degree positioning. New handwheel steering technology eliminates the front steering console, enabling the operator to easily monitor water spray performance. An LCD display and push-button controls simplify operation for an all-around comfortable operating environment.

Smooth, Maneuverable

These models feature a newly designed center-articulating hitch with 6 degrees of oscillation that ensures mat contact and a smoother ride over uneven surfaces. An offset hitch option extends coverage up to 6 in. (15.2 cm) and simplifies control next to obstacles. It delivers excellent performance on longitudinal joints by pinching the edge with the lead drum and sealing the joint with the trailing drum.

The CB64B is equipped with 79 in. (200 cm) drums, while the CB66B and CB68B utilize 84 in. (213 cm) drums. The Cat C4.4 engine rated at 142 hp (106 kW) comes standard with eco-mode and automatic speed control, leading to uniform compaction, fuel savings, reduced sound levels, and ultimately lower operating costs, according to the manufacturer.

Versatile Vibratory Systems

The B-Series tandem rollers offer a variety of vibratory options including dual amplitude, dual frequency, Versa Vibe and five amplitude systems. The Versa Vibe system creates a 2-in-1 machine with four amplitudes and two frequencies. This system provides two settings for lighter hitting and higher working speeds on thin lifts; and two settings for heavier hitting, and slower speeds, on thick lifts or those with challenging mixes. The five-amplitude system offers the widest range of amplitudes with a single frequency. This system is a heavy hitter, with more options that help fine-tune compaction performance on thick lifts. The system also works well on tough-to-compact mix designs that consist of large aggregate and low levels of filler and binder.

Durable Water Spray System

Reliable water spray systems are needed to keep rollers on the mat and on pace with the paver. The high-capacity system on these models are designed with dual spray bars, dual pumps, triple filtration, adjustable intermittent operation and an optional freeze protection kit.

The dual pumps provide back-up capability and alternate with the direction of travel to maximize service life. Clogging is prevented through filters at the fill point, water pumps and spray nozzles. The adjustable intermittent mode conserves water and minimizes re-fills for optimal efficiency. The optional freeze protection kit helps ensure the roller is ready when you need it.
